Brenntag Deepens Energy Footprint With Chem Tech Deal

Brenntag has acquired Chem Tech Services, a US production chemicals provider focused on the Permian Basin, as part of efforts to expand its energy platform in North America.

The German chemicals distributor said on 18 November 2025 that Chem Tech would be integrated into Coastal Chemical, its oil and gas division serving upstream, midstream and downstream customers. The deal signed and closed simultaneously. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Brenntag said the acquired business generated more than $80mn in sales in the past 12 months, adding scale to its operations in Texas and New Mexico. The Permian Basin, spanning west Texas and south-east New Mexico, remains the largest oil-producing region in the US and a focal point for oilfield services activity.

Production chemicals are used to manage corrosion, prevent scale build-up, maintain flow and treat water in oil and gas wells. While less visible than drilling rigs or pipelines, they are central to maintaining output and protecting infrastructure. In high-activity areas such as the Permian, reliability and rapid delivery are closely linked to operating costs.

Brenntag said the combination would bring together Chem Tech’s regional customer relationships with its own distribution network and supply chain capabilities. It also pointed to Chem Tech’s local footprint, underscoring the importance of proximity in servicing field operations where response times can affect production.

The acquisition comes amid broader consolidation in the US oilfield chemicals market, as operators seek suppliers able to offer steady product availability, technical support and dependable logistics.

Estimates put the US oilfield chemicals market at about $6.85bn in 2024. Global forecasts suggest the sector could reach roughly $30bn by 2026, highlighting the scale of the opportunity for larger distributors.

As consolidation gathers pace, the integration of specialist teams and the retention of technical expertise are likely to determine whether increased scale translates into sustained competitive advantage.
