Oilfield water recycling pivots to lithium extraction, redefining value in the Permian Basin
14 Feb 2026

A quiet revolution is taking shape in the Permian Basin, and it has nothing to do with drilling faster or fracking deeper. This time, the transformation is chemical, not mechanical. Companies are learning to turn oilfield wastewater into lithium carbonate, converting what was once a disposal problem into a valuable source of critical minerals.
Element3 recently announced it has successfully produced lithium carbonate from the Permian’s vast volumes of produced water. With its Midland-area operations now underway, the company hopes to tap into the region’s steady flow of wastewater as feedstock for domestic battery-material supply chains. The effort aligns with national pushes to secure homegrown sources of lithium, a key ingredient in electric vehicles and grid-scale batteries.
At the same time, Select Water Solutions has entered a definitive agreement with LibertyStream Infrastructure Partners to install lithium carbonate production units at Select’s existing recycling hubs. The first facility, planned for Howard County, is expected to be commissioned by the end of 2026 with capacity of up to 1,000 tonnes per year. The project will leverage Select’s current water treatment network to streamline logistics and minimize new infrastructure needs.
For decades, managing produced water has been one of the industry’s most costly challenges. Now, it’s being recast as an opportunity. By integrating mineral recovery into established water-handling systems, companies can extract new value while cutting waste and transport inefficiencies. Select’s arrangement links lithium recovery to its pipelines and treatment plants, allowing it to earn royalties on production while handling sourcing, transport, and pre-treatment of water streams.
Challenges remain, from fluctuating lithium prices to the unpredictable chemistry of produced water and evolving regulatory frameworks. Yet the trend is unmistakable: if these ventures deliver steady performance at scale, the oilfield’s midstream water systems could become an unexpected pillar of America’s critical-minerals strategy.
