Pertamina and Halliburton signed a memorandum of understanding on February 22 to deploy well construction and stimulation technology across Indonesia's onshore fields. Under the agreement, the two companies will evaluate multi-stage hydraulic fracturing, acid stimulation, and advanced cementing services. Closed-loop automation with artificial intelligence capabilities forms part of the technical scope.

Mature fields stand to gain the most. Revitalizing aging reservoirs requires more than conventional methods, and the partnership aims to combine unconventional techniques with local reservoir knowledge. Field-level data will be paired with technology that has shown results in comparable geological settings elsewhere. "Halliburton integrates proven unconventional methodologies with localized reservoir insights to improve performance, strengthen local capabilities, and deliver technology-based solutions that maximize asset value for our customers," said Martin White, senior vice-president for Asia Pacific at Halliburton.

Domestic production pressure has built as Indonesia's mature fields decline, pushing field revitalization toward the top of the national energy agenda. If AI-driven automation and advanced fracturing services lift recovery rates, the deal would also help build in-country technical expertise over time.

The implications reach beyond a single operator. Should the rollout succeed, it would validate unconventional stimulation methods under Southeast Asian geological conditions, offering other regional producers a possible template for their own ageing fields. A stronger local skills base would also position Indonesia as a more significant hub for advanced oilfield services across Asia Pacific.

Energy security remains high on the agenda for governments and industry alike, lending the agreement broader significance. Regional operators and investors will be watching progress on the selected onshore fields closely, with results likely to shape how quickly next-generation drilling and stimulation technology spreads across Southeast Asia.
